Help! My Principal Licensure Program Didn’t Teach Me How to Lead & Support Literacy Instruction In My School

A principal’s understanding of literacy development is arguably one of the most critical aspects of ensuring ALL children learn to read and write. Too often, principals are left feeling overwhelmed and sometimes even confused about the things that matter most when developing and supporting effective literacy practices in every classroom, for every child.
This session is a real-life case study, presenting one principal’s growth in her understanding of literacy development and, subsequently, improvement in her leadership of all teachers in being more responsive to students’ needs. The most important outcome, of course, is that all students are learning to read.
Session Outcomes:
  • Understand the progression of reading development and what to look for when observing in classrooms: what is necessary in literacy instruction and what is not.
  • Learn specific strategies to support your teachers in gathering diagnostic reading data, matching instruction to individual needs, delivering highly effective core instruction, and aligning interventions when needed.
  • Solidify your understanding of the critical importance of Phonemic Awareness & Phonics in a balanced & comprehensive literacy program.
  • Learn strategies that can be implemented immediately at no cost, with very little prep, using just a few materials your teachers already have on hand.
  • Increase your understanding of Minnesota’s comprehension standards in Reading Literature and Reading Informational Text, their progression, and how to apply them effectively to align all tiers of literacy instruction
