A School's Story of Creating Equity and Collective Responsibility through Tier 1 Interventions

Log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) provide a structure for collaboration across a school by engaging all stakeholders in best literacy practices. Schools take on the challenging work of implementing MTSS in an effort to dramatically affect the outcome of student growth. In this session, we will share research about implementing an MTSS framework for elementary reading (Path to Reading Excellence in School Sites - PRESS) and one principal’s story of implementation. Participants will learn about one rural elementary school’s efforts to build a school culture of learning and collective responsibility to meet the literacy needs of an increasingly diverse student population. In this school-university partnership story, presenters will detail how they implemented tier one interventions to raise reading achievement for students while also building capacity for collaboration and collective efficacy for staff. Presenters will highlight implementation successes and challenges, how these align with what research identifies as common, and how a principal worked with the support of PRESS and school personnel to overcome obstacles and impact student outcomes.

In this session, participants will:
  • Learn about one school’s experience implementing Tier one interventions within an MTSS framework for elementary reading (Path to Reading Excellence in School Sites - PRESS)
  • Review the relevant MTSS implementation research for reading, leadership, and tier one interventions
  • Understand common challenges of program implementation, while also receiving
suggestions for successful application in a diversity of school settings
